ISTS Footy Pools for 2024 - Round 2

I was seriously busy at the Grand Prix because the track invasion never happened and while we packed everything away in record time, we took the opportunity to debrief over a few convivials which still stopped me doing these results until now.

So when I turned my computer off and told them to go away for a while, I finally got this done.

So now there is only one thing to do!  And that is....  Lets all look together!!

ISTS AFL Pools 2024 - Round 1 Results

Welcome to the ISTS Footy Pools for 2024

This competition is in its 14th year using a web site to help with the tips entry and results production!

I am still heavily involved in motor racing and Lions this year so match reports might be briefer at times.

We have the extra Round 0 this year with just 4 matches just to confuse everyone.  The Fantasy league doesn't even include that as a scoring round probably because it is the shortest round this year.  The 8 teams that play in Round 0 get a Bye (2 teams at a time) in Rounds 2, 3, 5 and 6.  Round 4 is that Gather Round where all matches are played in South Australia.   Got it?   The usual Bye rounds are later in the season so let's worry about that then.

So we effectively have 25 rounds of footy for the Minor round part of the season and hence the fee is up to $25 this year.  It feels like the AFL don't want Rugby League to have a much longer season than AFL.

Also - I did put in the original message that the web site has been updated so that when you tap or click your team and it is instantly recorded.  If it goes green it was seen!

There is no submit button for tips anymore.

In 2023, we had 109 punters.  This year we have 103.  The prize money looks like this.

Weekly Prize $72.10 70%
Donation to Childhood Cancer Research $118.45 5%
End of Year  1st $284.28 12%
End of Year  2nd $165.83 7%
End of Year  3rd $94.76 4%
End of Year 32nd last $47.38 2%

Based on our tipsters, there was one upset.  It wasn't the defeat of reigning Premiers, Collingwood by the Giants.  That was actually 50/50 but the Blues' wafer thin win over the Lions at the Gabba!   It was only predicted by 2% of us so it is feeling like getting all 4 tips correct in this round might be a bridge too far!

ISTS AFL Pools 2024 - Round 0 Results for Tipsters

This week, you needed to get 7 correct for the round.   ll matches except the upsets!  There were 4 winners this week each earning $19.08.

Congratulations to Anne Petrie, Patricia Coulthard, Brett Heritage and Si Michie.

This week, you needed to get 3 correct for the round. There were a plethora of 33 winners this week each earning $2.18.

Congratulations to Grant Williams, Marek Pokorny, Karen Hickman, Pat Sleeman, Heather Mander, Kirsty Rogerson, Neville Rankine, Sam Cooper, Alan Brideson, Ian Mills, Bernie Hoffmann, Clifford Sleeman, Lisa Morgan, Brian Quick, Les Shalhoub, Jossalyn Murphy, Tracey Goode, Brett Heritage, Andrew Crook, Bill Verrier, Bruce Thomas, Gary Wood, Ryan Bailey, Len Colgan, Bernie McGrath, John Boland, Christopher Blake, Ben Stevens, Anthony McAvaney, Paul Sherlock, Jenny Quilliam, Ian Duncan and Anthony Beck.

This week's ladder is not worth worrying about too much because so many people are on the same score.

The current 32nd last place holder is Robert Smith.

This week there were 9 distinct tip patterns.

The average total score is 2.0 and the average score this round was 2.0.

As usual, it looks like for most of us, it will take a while to get our heads around this year.

 The Grand Final!

Results for the Grand Final Round 4 of ISTS AFL Footy Pools for the year 2023!

97 Punters, 9 finals matches, who will be the top 5 punters of the Finals for 2023?

Welcome to the Grand Final round of the ISTS AFL Pools Finals competition for 2023.  Well - this was a Grand Final of Epic proportions.  Only a full time draw with extra time on offer would have exceeded the excitement level..

This year, we had just Adam Mather and Bernie Hoffmann in the Grand Final.   Lachie Neale won the  Brownlow on Monday night and there was some controversy about how he scored 3 points in a couple of matches where plenty of other players appeared to have performed so much better.  But it is what it is and it didn't work for the Lions in the wash-up.

The Grand Final was won by the Magpies over the Lions by a thilling tight 4 point margin.

So which of these two managed to take the 1st prize of $194  Well it was Bernie who tried to sit on the fence and jagged the lowest Pie margin which put him ahead of Adam!

Congratulations to Bernie Hoffmann for 1st prize of $194  but Adam Mather gets a tidy $97 for his effort and 2nd Prize. Working backwards to last week, the 2 who made the prelims but only got one tip right get 3rd and 4th prizes.  Congratulations to Anna Parente for 3rd (finished 48th for the season) and adding $50.44 to her haul and David Shaw for 4th who finished 52nd and added $27.16 to his winnings - also his send straight 4th place!  Prior to that, the 5th placed punter was Brett Heritage was the highest minor round finisher eleiminated in the Semis (or Qualifying Finals if you prefer) and added $19.77 to his kitty.

This year we had 97 punters in the finals and the 1st to 5th prizes are:

    Prize  Punter Minor Round Finish
1st 50% $194.00     Bernie Hoffmann 102
2nd 25% $97.00     Adam Mather 100
3rd 13% $50.44     Anna Parente 48
4th 7% $27.16     David Shaw  52
5th 5% $19.40     Brett Heritage 22

So thanks for having some fun with us this year. Messages will come out shortly for those of you with large amounts to collect. I prefer to pay these using bank transfers.

If you would like to donate your smaller winnings, it will be the Australian Lions Childrens Cancer Research Foundation next year.  This was my wife's special project when she was a District Governor in Lions for 2009-2010.   I feel it may be used more effectively as I now find the Breast Cancer Research donation go the The Hospital Research Foundation as they keep sending letters and requests for donations monthly and even offers for expensive (free) dinners so they can get more donations from me.  SO I want to move the donation to another of her passions that she actually raised many thousands of dollares for when she had the opportunity.  As Corinne said, no child should have cancer at such a young age and suffer the treatments.

I'd like to thank Brett Heritage for being on standby this year and for Pete Kiley for caring for and feeding the web site.

I hope all of you sign up again for next year's ISTS Footy Tipping competition. If you know of anyone who would enjoy being part of the competition next year, please get them to email, me at stonesw@internode.on.net as Internode are reducing the emails I can have.

Until 2024,

(ps - in the table below - the web site does not calculate the prize money for 1st to 5th so please use the commentary above as the prize payout information for the finals)

The Finals!

Results for the Semi Finals Round 2 of ISTS AFL Footy Pools for the year 2023

97 Punters, 9 finals matches, who will be the top 5 punters of the Finals for 2023?

And then there were 4!

We were down to just 25 punters left in after last week.  Given the predictions for the wins were 25% and 40% respectively, what do you imagine happened?   How many are left?

After Friday's match where the Blues got up over the wayward Demons, there were just 6 punters left.in.  Of those 6, 4 of them tipped the Giants and so they go through to the Preliminary Finals!   They are Anna Parente, David Shaw, Adam Mather and bernie Hoffmann..

Legend of the game, Ronald Dale Barassi AM, diedon Saturday at the age of 87.  He played in 6 premiershps for melbourne, was the leading goalkicker in the VFL in 1958 and 1959, Melbourne's Captain from 1960 to 1964. coached Carlton to two premierships in 1968 and 1970, coached North Melbourne to two premierships in 1975 and 1977 and was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1987.  He even coached the Swans from 1993 to 1995 where they won 1, then 4 and finally 8 matches as they improved over those three years.  Vale Ron Barassi.

The next week of the Preliminary Finals are as follows:

The Pies will host the Giants on Friday night at the MCG at 7:20pm and GWS get a 6 day rest while Collingwood have had the week off.

The Lions will host the Blues at the Gabba on Saturday evening at 4:45pm.  Is it possible that it could be an all non-Victorian team final?  Well ti is but the odds are slim.   Unlikely but we will all look together!

If there is a sneaky upset in the prelims we might all be back in for the Grand Final!  I guess if they each choose  a different combination of winners, that could mess the rest of us up. So stay tuned to see what happens with the 4 punters who a left in and tipping for next week!

Results for Qualifying Finals Round 1 of ISTS AFL Footy Pools for the year 2023!

97 Punters, 9 finals matches, who will be the top 5 punters of the Finals for 2023?

And then there were 6 teams left in the hunt!

Well the Qualifying Finals were a bit of a mixed bag.  The lowest predicted match was the Pies over the Demons at 60% closely followed the Giants beating the Saints at 63% as the only "Away" win.  Brisbane over the Power was 72% and the obvious one was Carlton defeating the Swans predicted by 80%.

Grunty is a bunter.  Although he has never played baseball.   Just want to see if he reads this and can translate.

Next week the Demons will take on the Giants at the MCG but the times have not been released at the time of writing.  The Power will host the Saints at Adelaide Oval at a time to be confirmed!  When that happens, we will open the Semi FInals round for tipping.

Last year we only had 4 punters left in the competition after the first week of Finals!.  Just a reminder that this one is a knock out competition such that if you get a tip wrong you are knocked out, unless of course everyone gets one wrong in which case we are all back in for the following week.

Well this year, we have 25 punters left tipping the finals and they are too numerous to enumerate (could be a great song title). Well done!

So none of the rest of us will get a reminder for next week.  Just these 4 are tipping but there are 4 combinations for two matches so if there is some upset and they pick all fail to pick the correct winning combination, we are all back in for the preliminary finals!

For accounting purposes, this year we have 97 punters in the finals and the 1st to 5th prizes will be:

Finals Share  Prize
1st 50%  $ 194.00
2nd 25%  $   97.00
3rd 13%  $   50.44
4th 7%  $   27.16
5th 5%  $   19.40
Totals: 100%  $ 388.00

Just a reminder that all finals participants will get a copy of the results each week.  But only those of you who are left in (with all correct tips) will have the ability to enter tips for the following week.  If you get reminded to tip - just do it!

ISTS Footy Pools Final Round and End of Year 2023 Results

Well there were so many shots at goal that were reviewed this weekend, I think it drove the crowds a bit crazy.  But a few of them were justified and turned out differently than they appeared with the naked eye.  I wonder how long this will go for though.  Remember when the umpires were hot on holding the ball?  Well that has gone by the wayside hasn't it?!

The Lions have not lost a home match at the Gabba all year.  So what might this mean for the Power?  If Port break that record and win, they go straight to a home Prelim final at Adelaide Oval two weeks later.   If the lose, they get a home semi-final at Adelaide Oval the following week.  So whatever happens, Port will get a home final whatever happens.

The Crowies finished 10th with a better season than last year but would have missed the finals anyway even if they had beaten the Swans.

There is still a gap week between the minor round and the finals and so we all get a rest from tipping next week, for those who opted into the Finals Series.   The first week of AFL finals looks like this without the venues and times at this stage.

Second Elimination Final - St Kilda v Greater Western Sydney at a venue to be confirmed.

Second Qualifying Final - Brisbane v Port Adelaide at the Gabba

First Qualifying Final - Collingwood v Melbourne at the MCG

First Elimination Final - Carlton v Sydney at the MCG

More importantly who has won the Footy Pools for 2023.  Let's all look together!

Drum Roll....................................................

Final week of 2023 minor rounds!

ISTS AFL Pools 2023 - Round 24 Results for Tipsters

Believe it or not, you really had to get all 9 correct for the round. There was just the one lucky winner this weekearning $76.30.

Congratulations to Martin (wtf?) Stone.

The current 31st last place holder is Heather Mander who managed to hang on to that from last week!  Well done!

This week there were 43 distinct tips - four more than last week.

The average total score for the year was 128.0 and the average score this round was 4.9, down 0.1 from last week.

OK, so who are the big winners for 2023?

Just a reminder that the prize money is as below.

  • First prize:        $300.84
  • Second prize:  $175.49
  • Third prize:       $100.28
  • 31st Last:            $50.14

Congratulations to our sole winner, Gary Wood who got out in front early in the competition but was hauled in towards the end but held on to be the clear winner.  His top score of  146 (compared to 149 last year with one less round!) and one point clear of the rest, so it means he gets the entire First Prize $300.84 added to his $26.02 winnings making a very nice total of $326.86! Gary is laying the long game!

Congratulations to Tristan Bibbo who was a clear solo second place and gets $175.49 added to his total winnings of $51.54 making a total winning haul of $1227.03. Tristan got 145 tips correct.

Congratulations to Anthony Beck for a clear 3rd place win and add $100.28 to his winning during the year of $23.46 making a nice $123.74.

Just missing out on the ladder for a share of the spoils at the end of the year were those on 143 points in Malcolm parsons, Andy Duncan and Catherine Nairn.

The final 31st last place holder is Heather Mander.  She gets $50.14 for lucky 31st last added to her $15.26 netts her $65.40.

It has been a huge year on-line!   Congratulations to all our Footy Pools winners!

And now some awards (non-monetary).

  • The Highest Finishing Loser (not winning a brass razoo) Award this year goes to Juris Wulfius in 27th place
  • The Wooden Spoon goes to Sahra McFetridge on just 16 points who went MIA after round 5..
  • The Most Average Punter was James Lipsham with the midpoint of the punters with a score of 128 and an accuracy of 65% which is a lot better than coin tossing!
  • The Median Punter was Michelle Ah Matt at position 55 in our ladder on 133 points which is better than the average by 5 points.
  • Our competition had a potential total of 22,563 tips for all punters.
  • The highest grossing punter who didn't win a major end of year prize was Anne Petrie awith a tidy $114.46 in winnings during the season!
  • 24 punters got more than their $24 investment back (1 less than last year!).  Another 62 punters got some money back but not enough to recover their investment. That leaves 23 punters who did all of their dough!
  • The average score for our 109 punters was 128.0 points. 63 punters were above average, 7 punters were average and 39 punters below average. But look on the bright side. Tossing a coin should produce 50% success which would mean 104 correct tips. Only 4 of us were worse than coin tossing!
  • There was an average of 2.2 voice mail tips left each week

Thanks all for your patronage this year.   I hope you have had some fun and you can collect on those side bets now!

A big thanks my Uni mate Pete Kiley who tweaks the web site, puts all the matches in for the home & away and the finals series.

Thanks to Brett Heritage for being on standby when I went Missing in Action!

In continuing the memory of my wife, Corinne, this year's donation of at least $125.35 will again be made to Breast Cancer Research.

Last year, this amount was topped up by the generosity of our punters and myself to make $700.

Hope to see you next year when it is time to turn on the tipping again.  We will work out the money distribution after the finals.

For those of you in the finals, hang on for the reminder which will come out when we have reset the web site for Finals tipping.

So sadly, the Matildas were not up to the class of England and although the Tillies had their chances, England had more and made the most of them.  England scored from a penalty kick by Ella Toone at 36 minutes.   Kerr blasted one in from 30m out at 63 minutes in the second half but the equalizer was short lived as Hemp goaled in the 71st minute.   England put the icing on the cake in the 86th minute and ended the Tillies tilt at the Cup but they finished higher than any other Australian Football team in a World Cup so it was and amazing effort and galvanised the country.

In the playoff for 3rd, Sweden were in Australia's colours which was confusing and the Aussies looked like there were wearing the English strip.  I guess it is their clash strip and because they lost their semifinal by more than Sweden did.  It looked like the Tillies had not quite dealt with their semi-final loss as it was a bit of a bruising affair as well.   Sweden scored in the first half and then wet up 2-0 in the second half to take 3rd place and leave the Matildas in 4th.  So a disappointing end to their challenge but its a big world stage they are playing on against counties with much more football history and experience.  The Tillies were given the keys to Brisbane City on Sunday morning.

Then Sunday night, England and Spain played off in the Women's World Cup Final at Stadium Australia and it was Spain who scored the only goal of the match even after taking a penalty kick in the second half which was miraculously saved by England's keeper, Mary Earps.  Spain makes history with its first WWC win.

The FIFA web site is here:  FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™   .

The big upset this week was West Coast stunning the Bulldogs and putting their finals tilt in serious doubt as only 1% of us predicted it.   Was Sydney getting up over the Crows which was tipped by just 13% but the AFL admitted a crucial and controversial goal umpiring decision was incorrectly made  and deemed a point, whereas a goal would have put Adelaide in front.  But of course there was still about 90 seconds on the clock and play would have started back in the centre so who knows if the Swans might still have legitimately won the match be wrestling the lead back.  it could be argued that Brisbane beating the Pies was a bit of an upset (especially at the 'G) with just 31% of us picking it.

So how many of those upsets did you need to get right in addition to the easy to pick matches?  Let's all look together!

ISTS AFL Pools 2023 - Round 23 Results for Tipsters

This week, you only needed to get 7 correct for the round. There were 7 winners this week each earning $10.90.

Congratulations to Lisa Morgan, Chris Cox, Jenny Quilliam, Kirsty Rogerson, Joanna Sundstrom, Justin King and Ian Duncan.

This week's ladder is very interesting. All on their own at the top of the ladder, we still have Gary Wood on 142 points. Just one point behind, we have Tristan Bibbo on 141 points. 3 points back we have Anthony Beck and Malcolm Parsons on 138 points. A bunch follows with Andy Duncan, Justin Faggotter and Catherine Nairn on 137 points. A bridge too far away are Chris Cox and Jason Allsopp on 136 points. Way too optimistic are Andrew Crook, Garth Challans and Lynette Duncan on 135 points. Then we have Jossalyn Murphy, Si Michie, John Whittaker and Gary Lyons on 134 points. Further back there are Joanna Sundstrom, Randall Kiesewetter and Justin King on 133 points. Absolutely dreaming are Kirsty Rogerson, Brett Heritage, Peter Kiley, Ben Stevens, Vicki Allen, Sandy Ellis and Juris Wulfius on 132 points.

This week's big movers and shakers begins with Ian Duncan up 11, Kirsty Rogerson up 10, Joanna Sundstrom and Jenny Quilliam up 9, Justin King up 8, Lisa Morgan and Patricia Coulthard up 7, Bruce Thomas, Jenny Butler, Chris Cox and Les Shalhoub up 6, Ian Mills, Neville Rankine, Jo Tonkin and Leonie Challans up 5, Tash Wilson, Amy Challans, Nicole King, Scott Ainsworth, Bob Ellis and William Johns-Thompson up 4.

The current 31st last place holder is Heather Mander who rose 3 places. Last week it was David Jones who fell 1 spots.

This week there were 39 distinct tips, down 5 from last week.

The average total score is 123.2 and the average score this round was 5.0 down 0.6 fromlast week.

The Power held on to 3rd on the ladder after their grinding win over Freo.  They can still make it up to 2nd spot for a home final if they beat the Tigers and hope that the Saints defeat the Lions who are currently 2nd on the ladder.  Otherwise they will likely play Brisbane at the Gabba for the first week of the finals.  But other combinations are possible and mathematics says that if the Pies lose to the Bombers AND The Lions lose to the Saints AND Port thrash the Tigers by more than 130 points, then they are a chance to go minor premiers!  The Power take on the Tigers at Adelaide Oval at middayon Sunday.

The Crows are now 13th after being robbed of a decent chance at victory by the northern goal umpire late in the final term.  If it had been reviewed, it would have been deemed a goal on the video evidence alone.  No posts were harmed by any ball from that Keays kick.  However, we move on to see if they can pick themselves up and get over the improving Eagles in the west next week on Saturday evening.

Next week is the last round of the home and away season and really, it is a matter of whether the Bulldogs can push out the Giants from the eight.  The rest is set but the order might change.  Hang on for the ride to see who will win out tipping competition!
